Chick-Fil-A Might Stop Donating to Anti-LGBTQ Charities

Chick-Fil-A’s Chief Operating Officer Tim Tassopoulos announced that the company will stop donating to charities with anti-LGBTQ stances at the beginning of next year. The decision comes after several airports throughout the country rejected deals with the restaurant chain as well as its entrance into more liberal, urban markets. The organizations that Chick-Fil-A will allegedly stop donating to include the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Paul Anderson Youth Home.

Rodney Reed’s Execution is Postponed

Rodney Reed’s execution, which was scheduled for Wednesday, was postponed for another 4 months after new witnesses suggested he is innocent. Reed was sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder of Stacey Stites, a woman he was allegedly having an affair with and who was found strangled on the side of a road.

Last week, Reed’s scheduled execution created a social media uproar and got the attention of Kim Kardashian West and other celebrities who argued that Reed had not yet been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The three witnesses who came forward said that they heard Stites  fiancé Jimmy Flennell admitting to murdering Stites for ‘sleeping with a Black man,’ according to the New York Times.

Lil Nas X Won Big at Country Music Awards

Lil Nas X became the first openly gay Black man to win Musical Event of the Year at the Country Music Awards (CMAs) in Nashville last week. His achievement comes after a year of conversations around whether “Old Town Road” qualified as a country track, which some critics argued came from the erroneous notion that country music is inherently white.

Mo’Nique Sues Netflix

Actress and comedian Monique Hicks, known commonly as Mo’Nique, filed a lawsuit against Netflix for gender and race discrimination earlier this month. Mo’Nique said that she was offered $500,000 in 2017 for a one-hour comedy special, while other comedians of a similar tier got paid much more, citing the company’s deals with Chris Rock ($40 million), Dave Chapelle ($60 million) and Amy Schumer ($11 million).

Female Abduction Fears Sweep the Internet

The Black/POC internet has been set ablaze by conversations around human trafficking after videos of violent kidnappings went viral on social media. The fears reached a peak since Clark University student Alexis Crawford was found dead in an Atlanta Park earlier this month.

Celebrities of color including Keke Palmer and Alexis Sky have shared personal stories about human trafficking, which disproportionately affects Black girls. By some estimates, Black women make up 43 percent of all sex trafficking victims.
