The U.S. surpassed China and became the country with the most confirmed coronavirus cases, New York City is still epicenter and Trump said he wanted to reopen the country by Easter

On Thursday, the United States became the country with the most confirmed cases of Covid-19, with more than 122,700 compared to China’s 81,000. However, the U.S. still lags behind China and Italy in terms of total deaths.

Infection rates New York City grew exponentially as doctors and nurses complained about a lack of protective equipment. Videos circulated on social media showing medical staff covering themselves with makeshift masks and trash bags. On Thursday Kious Kelly, a 48 year-old assistant nurse manager in Manhattan, died just ten days after he tested positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump suggested reopening businesses throughout the country by Easter, April 12. Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, clarified that the president’s projection was ‘aspirational… to give people hope.’

… while New Orleans, Chicago and Detroit are expected to become new epicenters

Confirmed cases in Louisiana skyrocketed, likely a byproduct of its annual Mardi Gras celebrations that took place at the end of February. Chicago and Detroit are also expected to see a spike in infections next week.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson tested positive

On Friday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson posted a video on Twitter saying he had tested positive for the coronavirus and will continue to lead the country under quarantine.

The Tony Awards, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and Essence Festival were postponed

On Wednesday, the Tony Awards announced that it would postpone the awards show indefinitely, which was scheduled to take place on June 7. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which were scheduled to take place this July, were also postponed until potentially July of 2021.

On Friday, Essence announced that their annual festival, whose headliners included Janet Jackson and Bruno Mars, would be postponed until at least Fall of 2020.

The iHeart Living Room Concert for America will feature some of music biggest stars performing remotely from their homes. The benefit show will replace the previously postponed annual iHeart Music Awards which were due to take place tonight. Instead the remote benefit show will take place at 9pm ET on FOX and feature performances by Mariah Carey, Billie Eilish, H.E.R., Alicia Keys, Sam Smith and more.
