Netflix’s latest hit ‘Tiger King’ has become a pop culture phenomenon around the world as people tune into the madness of Joe Exotic’s life as a zoo owner. The binge-worthy series features a three-way gay marriage, drug addiction, conspiracy theories, lions, tigers, and Carol Baskin; luckily, it doesn’t feature any black people. As it turns out, there’s a reason for that.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, directors Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin discussed former zoo owner Joe Exotic and his racist antics, which didn’t make the cut in the Netflix series.
“Joe is a racist,” Chaiklin said. “I would say categorically. He said things when we were filming that were very unsettling.”
The director went on to explain why Joe’s racism wasn’t highlighted in the series.
“They didn’t have a context in the story, but he has a lot to learn. I think most of it was ignorance and not having a lot of exposure, and I think he even evolved over the course of the time that we filmed.”
In a video on Joe’s YouTube channel, he questions why he can’t use the n-word.
“I can’t say the n-word but you can get on Youtube and watch any black man’s rap video and they’re calling each other the n-word.”
