In what can only be described as an act of Black Girl Magic, four Black women reached the two top spots on the Hot 100 list for the first time in history. The spots are currently claimed by Doja Cat, Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonce.
This week, the battle for the top spot was fought between Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonce’s, “Savage” remix, which made an unexpected debut two days before the arrival of Doja Cat ft. Nicki Minaj’s “Say So”. Doja Cat’s remix ended up taking the top spot, giving her and Minaj their first number ones, while Savage is currently at number two.
The Say So remix was released on May 1st and was fueled by streaming plays. It is the first time in six years that a female collaboration topped the chart, the last being Iggy Azela’s “Fancy,” featuring Charlie XCX in 2014.
Minaj’s fans, affectionately dubbed Barbz, fueled sales of the song when they bought varying visions of the remix that featured different verses from Queen Minaj. Meanwhile, Megan Thee Stallion released a new video on TikTok, the platform that contributed to most of the success of the original version of “Savage”.
Doja and Nicki add their names to a short list of female rappers who have reached the top of the chart. Their collaboration became the first by two female rappers.
