On Thursday, Lana Del Rey made an Instagram post complaining about how other women musicians, including Doja Cat, got to sing about sex without being criticized. Many on social media came to the defense of Doja and the other women of color Del Rey singled out.
A day later, Doja became the source of a completely different controversy after someone posted a video of her allegedly taking part in a video chatroom called “Tea Time”. That chatroom is infamous for its users, many who identify as “incels” and engage in overt racism.
According to people who watched one of the leaked videos, Doja asked users in the chatroom to call her a “n*gger” and made fun of victims of police brutality, including Sandra Bland.
The leaked videos were enough for many to cancel the musician.

Other Twitter users pointed out that Doja Cat released a song called “Dindu Nuffin” shortly after the death of Sandra Bland three years ago. “Dindu nuffin” is slang for “didn’t do anything” used by white supremacists as a way to make fun of black victims of police brutality. Some believe that Doja Cat used the song to make fun of Bland, who was arrested after a routine traffic stop and later died in her prison cell.
Just last week, Nicki Minaj’s Remix of Doja’s “Say So” took the top spot on the Billboard charts.
On Sunday night, Doja responded to the backlash on an Instagram post.
