The hashtag #BlackoutTuesday is dedicated to showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement following the murders of Aahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and other recent victims of police brutality. On social media, people are posting Black squares to symbolize their solidarity with the protests happening throughout the U.S. and beyond.

The trend started with music producers Jamila Thomas and Brianna Agyemang, who wanted to slow down business-as-usual and use June 2nd as a day of reflection. Many music labels and artists including the Rolling Stones and Billie Eilish said they would participate, and the trend quickly grew.

Several users on Instagram and Twitter have noted that people are using the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter or #BLM on their Blackout Tuesday posts. Many are urging people to delete the hashtag and reserve it for vital information about the actual protests.
