Yesterday, Sony Pictures won the bidding war for Whitney Houston’s biopic “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” Anthony McCarten, the screenwriter for Bohemian Rhapsody, has signed on to write while Stella Meghie (The Photograph) will be directing.

Whitney Houston is one of the most decorated musicians of all time. She is considered one of the greatest vocalists and has been nominated for 25 Grammy Awards.

The biopic comes with the blessing of the Houston estate, with Pat Houston producing the film alongside McCarten, music producer Clive Davis, Larry Mestel and Denis O’Sullivan. Davis insists that the film will cover Houston’s music career as well as her complicated personal life.

Houston’s long and illustrious career took off after she starred and performed in the soundtrack for the 1992 film The Bodyguard,  which earned her a Grammy for Album of the Year as well as Record of the Year for her classic song, “I Will Always Love You.” Many of her tracks are considered stables of Pop and R&B music and she has had a major influence  on some of today’s biggest artists.

The biopic is set to open in time for Thanksgiving 2022 and Sony has emphasized the importance of the film receiving a theatrical release. The film’s cast has not yet been announced.
