This thread follows the latest developments in the George Floyd case.

Wednesday, May 28

Thousands took to the streets in Minneapolis on Tuesday night to protest the death of George Floyd, whose murder by four police officers was recorded and spread through social media on Tuesday. Despite ongoing social distancing orders, videos show what appears to be thousands of people protesting Floyd’s killing. According to several reports, the police unleashed tear gas and rubber bullets on protestors.

In addition, security footage from a restaurant near Floyd’s arrest seemed to show Floyd calmly complying with police as they arrested him. This contradicts initial reports that said Floyd was resisting arrest.

A video has surfaced of a Black man in Minneapolis who was handcuffed and pinned down by a police officer on Monday. Shortly after the video was filmed, the man was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.

The Black man who was later identified as George Floyd, was arrested after a grocery store clerk thought he was forging checks. Floyd was sitting on his car when police came to arrest him. In the video, it is clear that Floyd is in serious distress and that he has trouble breathing; he repeatedly tells the police officers that he can’t breath.

The police officer who pinned down Floyd has been identified as Derek Chauvin.

The event was eerily reminiscent of the murder of Eric Garner, who suffocated after being tackled by the NYPD in 2014.

The police four officers who were present during Floyd’s murdered were fired on Tuesday night.
