Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser officially renamed a part of 16th Street leading up the White House “Black Lives Matter Plaza.” The move came just hours after she had the city paint “Black Lives Matter” in big yellow letters on that street.

Muriel Bowser is a Democrat and became the Mayor of Washington, D.C. in 2015. She is only the second Black woman to serve as that city’s Mayor even though that city is nearly 50 percent Black.

Despite her vocal support for the Black Lives Matter movement, Bowser’s record on police brutality remains iffy. In 2015, she proposed legislation that would have allowed law enforcement to perform warrantless searches of violent ex-offenders. That legislation was quickly struck down.

On Friday afternoon, Mayor Bowser posted a video of Black Lives Matter Plaza with a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King.

“…I’m happy to live in this period is that we have been forced to a point where we’re going to have to grapple with the problems that men have been trying to grapple with through history, but the demand didn’t force them to do it,” she wrote.
